Sunflower Market...Double Deals Tomorrow..Worth the Money!

Here is the deals for this coming week and last week. Sunflower honors both of their ads on Wednesdays. Also I have to say I am finding it worth my money to go out of my way to shop at Sunflower. Here are the best prices in my opinion. If you would like to view their entire ad just click here.

  • Mild Cheddar Cheese 1.99 lb (bulk)
I decided I would make my raspberry jam and picked up my raspberries at Sunflower on Saturday. Today was the day I made it. I was afraid I would not have enough raspberries so I picked up a couple more at Walmart today (they do price match Sunflower).

However when preparing the raspberries I had to throw nearly half of each container of raspberries away that I bought from Walmart (today keep in mind) because they were moldy or rotten. What a waste of money. And my Sunflower raspberries (that I bought on Saturday) I only had to throw away maybe 7 berries total from six containers of raspberries.

My fruit stays fresher longer from Sunflower. Yes I have gotten some fruit that isn't perfect in flavor. But over all I like the taste better and it lasts longer.

One other thing I found out last week when I was shopping. If you use re-usable grocery bags they give you a .10 credit toward your order for each bag you use when you check out. How great is that. I know it is only ten cents but I think it's very enviro and customer friendly.

Yard Sales- Does it Have to Be New?

I am an avid yard sale shopper. I love yard sales. I find so many AWESOME deals. Not only for myself but I like to sell on ebay to bring in a little cash. Like with anything else you have to practice to get good at it. Yesterday I made a bit of splurge but it was so worth it!

I was at a yard sale and found a little beat up train book but decided to get it anyway because my boy LOVES trains. I mentioned it to the lady having the yard sale and she said she had a Thomas the train set she was trying to sell but hadn't been successful yet.She brought it out and it was a Thomas the Tank engine basic figure 8 track with 6 complete locomotive sets. I couldn't believe it. The trains themselves sold for $20 a set and she was asking $30 for everything. Not only would David love it but once we were done I could re-sell it on ebay and make back what I spent for sure. I would have saved this for Christmas but I know David's "favorite" toy theme changes and wasn't sure if he would still love trains in December. His birthday wasn't until January so the lucky boy had Christmas in June!

I find so many of these hidden treasures. For yard sale tips click here. I have been doing this for several years and have some basics I have learned. Although yesterday I was pleasantly surprised because I had to yard sale near my house due to time and I walked away with these items:
  • The Thomas the Tank engine set $30.
  • A cat post in good condition for $2. We are planning on getting a couple of kittens and I didn't want to buy everything at retail. I want to invest as little as possible on a free or almost free animal.
  • Aeropostle and Holister shirts. My daughter won't wear anything but these brands and a lady was selling shirts for $1 in "like new" condition. (If my daughter knew I told you I bought her shirts at a yard sale she would kill me).
  • A crockpot for $2. It was an older model but works great. It is medium size and perfect for day-to day cooking.
Try yard sale shopping. If you are not very successful your first time don't give up. Some weeks I walk away with nothing and others I have a van full!

Confirmed .50 on Starbucks Ice Cream at Walmart

I did cash in on this deal yesterday when I did my weekly grocery shopping. I was at Jordan Landing and they had the Starbucks Ice Cream marked at 3.00. I had the cashier check the price and it came up at 2.50.

They had plenty of the flavors including the hot chocolate flavor if you don't drink coffee. It is a small container but I can't wait to to taste it. Click here to read how to get this deal. Thanks Utah Deal Diva.

One other little note I almost threw this coupon away. I don't drink coffee and thought I would never use this coupon. But I decided to hang on to it just in case. I'm sure glad I did.

Get a Grip

I love good deals. When I read them on someone's blog I want to run to the store and grab it before it's gone. But lately I have been so unhappy with my game plan. I walk away from the store having only spent a few dollars but the trip was unplanned. Often I buy something I don't need.

A good example was tonight. I was reading a couple of blogs about getting ice cream for only .50 and another had a curling iron for only 1.99. I was ready to grab my purse and head to the stores.

But my "quick trips" were defeating the purpose of my frugal shopping. I hate it when I lose a coupon or I bought something I didn't need. And yet I have been making all these quick trips for super duper items. But it adds up.

So here is my advice. By the way I am writing this post more for myself than anyone else. But thought it might help someone along the way.
  • Stick to my budget
  • Don't blow all my money for the week in two days! I always over spend when I do that
  • Look over the grocery deals and other deals and plan around it
  • If I have a little money left in my budget stock up on a super great deal otherwise let it go!
  • If there isn't a great deal hold on to those extra bucks for the next week
  • There will always be another sale!
Whew! Glad I reminded myself of those things. Hope that might help any of you who are trying to save money and stay on budget.

Dinner in a Flash!

In starting my blog I have discovered something I didn't realize about myself, how much I dread making dinner. Usually I am exhausted by the evening and want someone else to cook for me. Or we have a ball game or practice somewhere that puts us at home just when dinner should be served.

And I find us tempted far too many times to pick up dinner at a fast food restaurant. Or buying a few things from the "dollar" menu. But then my kids are hungry only after an hour or so when we do that. So I thought I would list a few things I have done that have helped me out.
  • Deli Chicken- Often you can buy a 10 piece all dark meat from the grocery deli for about $5. At home make some instant potatoes with a gravy mix. Throw some frozen veggies in the microwave and have a piece of fruit. Very fast and very tasty. In fact I did that tonight and dinner was served in under 7 minutes. One other note the chicken may not be the healthiest choice but it saved me a lot more fat and calories than a Big Mac and fries would have been.
  • Marinades- One of the easiest ideas ever! I just have to remember this in the morning or night before. You just dump it in a Tupperware container and add the chicken and refrigerate until ready to cook. When you come home, take the chicken throw it in a pan (non-stick coat first) add a little of the marinade juices and cook for about 7-10 minutes and it's done. Cook your rice at the same time. A lot of bottled salad dressings often times are marinades too, so no thinking involved.
  • Frozen Lasagna- I would love to say I whip together several of these and store them in the freezer but I am not that organized yet. We all like Stouffer's lasagna. It cooks for over two hours and I can usually start it and have it ready when we come home. If I am particularly organized I will cook it early in the day and just reheat it when we get home. Add a frozen veggie and bagged salad and voila dinner is served.
  • Crock Pot- If I know we have something in the evening I can use my crock pot. One very simple crock pot idea we use is chicken gravy with rice. I add boneless, skinless chicken breast with a can of cream soup and a little milk. Let it cook on low for several hours (around 6-8 depending on how much chicken). If you start in the morning you can throw your chicken in frozen. When you come home cook up some instant rice. You can even be healthy and make Instant brown rice. It takes 10 minutes to cook but it is very good and healthier than white rice. A book that has a lot of good recipes for the crock pot that aren't strange is called Fix it and Forget It, Feasting with your Slow Cooker by Dawn J. Ranck
  • Pancakes and eggs- I am not a breakfast person so my family doesn't get a hot breakfast too often and enjoy having it for dinner every so often.
  • Hamburger already cooked- I almost forgot this tip and yet it can save you so many times. I will cook up several pounds of ground beef. Then I will divide it into 1 pound servings in ziploc bags and freeze it. Then it is ready to go. That way I can make spaghetti, tacos or Hamburger Helper in a flash.
  • Restaraunts.com- If you have to eat out try this website you can get great gift certificates for a fraction of the cost. Often times they will have discounts on top of the gift certificates making it a super deal. For example we were able to get a gift certificate to a mexican restaraunt for $25 for only $2. In all we spent under $20 for a family of four. That's $5 a plate and that included drinks and a dessert. You often times have up to a year to cash in on the gift certificate you buy. Right now they are offering $25 gift certificates for only $3. Just click here for their website and when checking out use the discount code recipe.
  • Use Paperware- Clean up is also something I dread so use paperware. It helps to keep the clean up down.
Have any other quick dinner tips? I would LOVE to hear them.

Fun for the kids without the expense

This afternoon the wind really picked up and it started to rain. That meant the kids had to come inside to play. For fun I thought they could play with the playdough. Unfortunately it was all dried up. Do I go to the store? Maybe I could think of something else for them to do.

Instead I decided to google playdough recipes. For just a few cents the kids had a great time. I am so glad I thought to do that. If I had gone to the store it would have cost a lot more. I would have bought the playdough plus the gas, the time and the extra little things I would have thrown into the basket on my trip.

Homemade Playdough Recipe:

1 cup flour

1 cup of water
1/2 cup of salt
2 tablespoons cream of tarter ( I only had 1 Tbsp. and it still turned out great)
1 tablespoon of oil
Add food coloring if you like

Cook the ingredients on medium heat. Make sure you stir continually so it doesn't get lumpy. Keep stirring until it forms a ball or clump in the pan. Make sure you don't over-do it. I stopped when it seemed pasty but still moist. When done store new playdough in the fridge in an air tight container.

Target... Kashi Deal

ALL GONE!
I went to Target in Jordan Landing and 7000 South and Redwood and couldn't find anymore clearance Kashi cereal. If you find any let me know.

I don't know how long this will last but I was shopping at the Jordan Landing Target on Wednesday and they Kashi cereal marked down to 2.74. It was on the end cap where they put their clearance items.
It was a package that had two (15 oz) boxes of cereal. I addition to the savings their is a coupon inside for a free 1/2 gallon of Soy Milk, any flavor. Plus if you click here you can print a coupon for 1.50 off Kashi cereal. Make sure you hit your back button a couple of times and you can print the coupon twice.

Costco

I have never been a huge Costco customer. I just haven't had the money to buy things in large quantities or felt they had a big discount on their food. However I have found you get quality when you buy Costco and there are some items that are a good deal.

I also have found that if I use their monthly coupons to stock up on items then I know I am getting a good deal. It might not be the cheapest way but I know it's quality and I know I am paying discount over grocery store prices. Just a side not they do not accept manufacturer's coupons, only their own Costco coupons.

If you would like a match up of good prices at Costco click here. Also I am listing a couple of great deals you can get with Costco's coupons this month. They are valid 6/15-7/5. If you have lost, thrown away or just don't have their coupons that's okay. Just ask Costco's customer service for a set. Then you can get the savings.
  • Electrasol 3-in-1 Dishwasher Tabs B1G1 free. That's a 50% discount when you buy 2. There are 100 tabs in each tub.
  • Kirkland Signature 5 cheese Take and Bake Pizza $3 off. Regular price is 9.99. Their pizzas are huge.
I have not priced out the other coupons. But I know those two are great deals. Leave a comment if you have comments on another Costco coupon that would be a great deal.

Walmart...

Last week when shopping at Walmart they had several Kellogg cereals for only 2.00. Sad to say they went up to 2.33 this week. Wish I had cashed in on that deal. I know it's only .33 a box but I have a big family and will buy at least 6-8 boxes. That is about 2.50 more than I would have spent last week. If I do that too much it really hits my grocery bill.

I also am sorry to say that I can't always count on Walmart having the best prices overall anymore. I have noticed their prices have increased anywhere from .19 to .49 or more per item. That sounds like a little but it adds up quickly.

Tonight I went to Target and Walmart to do a little shopping. One item I needed was a toothbrush. I wanted to get a Colgate MaxFresh with my coupon. At Target they were priced at 2.54. I decided to hold off thinking Walmart would be less. Walmart's price was 2.88. I couldn't believe it. Good old Walmart was more expensive than Target.

Also I had some $1 off Skintimate coupons I wanted to use. Macey's has them on sale for 1.88 each. I thought Walmart would be the same or maybe even less. Again Walmart was out priced. Their regular price was around 2.25.

Dial hand soap. Albertson's had them on sale for 1.00 but was out so I thought I would pick some up at Walmart. Walmart's price was 1.19. I of course had them price match on all these items.

So be aware what you spend. If I don't have time to price match and shop smart I will always shop at Walmart because they do have overall good prices. I know I can get a better price than the grocery store. But Walmart is no longer as big of a discount as they used to be. I love getting a great deal with price matching and coupons.
Here are the best prices at Macey's in my opinion.

Smith's Lysol Cleaner Deals

Smith's Lysol Cleaner Sale 50% off
Total Cost : 12.90
Out of Pocket : 7.90
This is such a good deal. Here is the breakdown:
  • Lysol Pourable Cleaners on sale for 1.84. I then used a manufacturer coupon for .75 off making them 1.09 per bottle.
  • Lysol Bathroom Cleaner/Mildew Cleaner on sale for 1.94. I then used a manufacturer coupon for .75 off making them 1.19 a bottle.
  • Toilet Bowl Cleaner on sale for 1.59. I used a manufacturer coupon for .75 off making them .84 a bottle.
That means I paid an average of 1.17 per bottle. However I had $5 in catalina coupons I applied towards my purchase bringing my total down to only 7.90. That made an average of .72 per bottle.

We have a big family so we use more than the average family plus I am really excited because tomorrow our neighborhood is gathering cleaning supplies for the women's shelter and I can contribute to the cause.

You can find those coupons for Lysol products in SmartSource from either this last week 6/7, or 4/26

Walmart Deals... Kraft Mac n' Cheese deal

Making a trip to Walmart? Why not cash in on some great deals!

I was at Walmart in Jordan Landing on Wednesday and saw their boxes of Kraft Mac n' Cheese for only .50. Note it was on select boxes of fun shapes. Such as Cars, Hannah Montana, etc. Use that with coupon buy 3 get 1 free here and pay only .38 per box. You can print your coupon twice.

It's Hip to Save rounded up a lot of Walmart deals. Click here to look it over and take advantage of your coupons. Keep in mind prices may vary but over all when I have tried deals the prices have almost been exactly the same or a few cents off.

Don't forget Walmart will price-match any advertised price. It has to be a dollar amount not a percentage off and advertised in an ad. Example Smith's has their Lysol cleaners for 50% off, which Walmart will not match that. But Ream's has their Yoplait yogurts in their weekly ad for .44 a container which they will match (don't forget to use a coupon).

Albertson's Big Deals Update...Doubles on Sunday!

I have been dragging my feet with Albertson's "BIG" deals this week. I am not a big fan of putting out money to get money off on another transaction. I work on a weekly budget and often I need my money for that week.

Also nothing hit me in the ad that I needed. I was reading Utah Deal Diva and she had similar feelings. Another point she made that I feel too is it had a lot of pre-made and sugary stuff. I try not to load up on junk food and I make a lot of things from scratch so nothing had me rushing to the store.

Utah Diva Deal put some ideas together that made sense. Click here to view her ideas. I haven't dug into the list much so I will add anything that I think is a good deal. One item I think is a good deal is the Bertolli sauces, with it being so good I am afraid they will be running low or out by Monday for the doubles.

Helping our Kids to Eat...

Whether it's helping our kids to eat or helping them to eat more healthy choices here are a few tricks I have learned.
  • Shapes- Use a large cookie cutter to cut a sandwich into a shape. I have tried several times to get my son to eat a piece of cheese toast. At most he has taken two bites. Today I cut the toast into the shape of a star using a cookie cutter and he asked for seconds. Also display the food in a fun way, such as a face. Then instead of eating carrots you can ask them to eat the hair or the eyes instead of peas. The funner it is, the easier it is to get them to eat.
  • Separate it- If I am having chicken tacos I don't load everything into the tortilla. I will make a cheese quesadilla and put the chicken on the side to eat separately. Keep the meal simple. Works great with salad bars. I make a little pile of the different veggies that they can dip rather than mixing it into a salad.
  • Juice Bars- A new found item! My kids love popsicles. I made juice bars making a treat into something healthy. You can make it simple and use an ice cube tray and toothpicks. I am not a morning person so my kids eat cereal or frozen waffles or pancakes. To help get in a serving of fruit they can have a juice bar or two to get in a serving of fruit in the morning.

Bowling ...Summer Fun for almost Free!

All Star Lanes is offering this summer a great bowling deal. Students and their families can bowl 1 free game per day from 9 am to 6 pm. Shoe rental is not included. Shoe rental is $1.60 per person (including tax).

We tried it today. Our total for shoe rental and two games for eight people (2 adults and 6 kids)it was $25.65. We had small children and a big group so the two games went for 2 hour. Next time we will only bowl the one game. So the whole family can bowl for about $13.00. That's a bargain! Not to mention a great activity to fill long summer days.

For locations and more info click here. Also if you don't have students, they have another summer special. They have a daily special between 9 am and 6 pm that you pay for 1 game and shoe rental at regular price get any additional games for only $1.50 per person plus tax.

Albertson's Best Deals

Sorry I have been a little behind at posting grocery deals. Albertson's is having a big Kraft Sale. Once again Thrifty Mom has compiled a great list. Click here to get the most for your money.

Make sure you double check your receipt for your $3 off (count how many you should have). I went yesterday and both my friend's transaction and mine were missing one of our $3 off.

Don't forget your double coupons. They are on the weekly grocery ad. It makes their deals even better.

Dunford Bakery Deals

Tomorrow is Donut Day and Dunford Bakery is having a sale of $1 off a dozen donuts. Their chocolate cake donuts are my favorite.

Also my friend Angie informed me that on Monday mornings they sell their bread for .99 cents a loaf. Fresh bread at a great price, what a good deal.

Beans...A great idea

My goal this year is to work towards using more items I can store in my food storage. I also want it to be healthy and low-fat.

I have been trying to incorporate beans into our meals more often. I have several bags of beans in my food storage and have never used them.

In fact anytime I have needed beans I have used canned beans. My friend told me she never uses canned beans. So on a day I was going to be home for awhile I cooked up some dry beans on the stove. I thought they tasted so much better.

That night our chicken tacos had a lot of beans in it. My daughter hates beans but I made her try it. She liked them! That is saying a lot because she turns her nose up to most of what I cook. They were better tasting than any canned beans I have ever had.

They cost so much less than canned beans. They also freeze well so I can use them for later meals.

Smith's...Kool Aid & Country Time Lemonade

Just a reminder to print your coupons before they are gone. They only offer so many of each coupon.Smith's has their Kool-Aid canisters for only .99 and Country Time Lemonade canisters for only .99. At kraftfoods.com and coupons.com you can print coupons for $1/2 Kool Aid canisters and $1.50/2 Country Time lemonade canisters. So your Kool Aid is only .50 a canister. And your lemonade is .25 a canister, but it gets better....
If you buy two Country Time Lemonades you will get a Catalina Coupon (the coupons that print at the register) for $1.00 your next shopping trip at Smith's. That offer is good thru 6/11. Which is good because I went today and they were out of Country Time Canisters but I had them give me a raincheck. I will just check back before 6/11 so I can get that extra savings. Thanks Kristy for you great find!

Walgreen's Deals....Love these Deals!

I had to share these deals. They are super deals! I know when I read a good deal I have to act fast or it's gone.

I am not a big Walgreen shopper. It's out of my way and I have a hard time with deals at stores where they want you to "Spend so much money now and get money off on your next trip" deals. I have a weekly grocery budget and those deals don't always appeal to me.

On Thrifty Mom's blog she said you could get a blow dryer for only $2.99. The price caught my eye. Walgreen's is having a sale that if you buy a blow dryer for 19.99 you get $10 off your next shopping trip. However the blow dryers are on sale for only 12.99. So out of pocket is 12.99 but you will have $10 for your next shopping trip.

I had to try it. Long story short I tried it and it worked. I was very up front with the cashier about what I was doing and she had no problem letting me turn around and return the dryer if I didn't get my Register Reward. But I did.

Also I found this great deal post on Shopping with Cents for insect repellent. They have a Cutter Repellent that is only $2 and there is a $2 off coupon just from this Sunday's paper 5/31 SmartSource making it free. It is a small little bottle but it is a great size for traveling or sending to girls camp knowing it will probably be lost.

Albertson's Great Deals

Yesterday in the Sunday paper there were three double coupons. The coupons were not with the coupons but actually printed on the paper. In the Deseret News it was on page A8 and Tribune it was A10.

I used to just overlook these coupons but as I started trying it, it was like getting three items for free or almost free at the store.

PYP has a nice list of ways to use those doubles just click here to see the deals you can get with those doubles.

Also PYP is working on a preview for Albertson's grocery ad coming up. Yay! It really helps when you can get a jump on what the great deals are going to be for the next week.
